For two years only, 2005 and 2006, Saab and Subaru partnered to build a very capable model (9-2X) with the innards of a Subaru. Actually, it is more like a Subaru in Saab clothing.
For Saab it was a chance to reach younger adults, for Subaru it was a chance to deliver more AWD fun to a market that wasn’t used to WRX and STi.
I've only seen about 7 or 8 of these over the years, but they're pretty neat cars. They are an adult touch to a younger generation's car. The cars are based on WRX wagons of the time with the upgrades being mostly cosmetic and comfort based.
- The first thing you notice when you see these cars, "What body kit is that on that WRX?" Then you notice the Saab badge.
SAAB 9-2X repair | The hood scoop is a bit different. More sleek and aerodynamic. The headlights and bumper are more rounded.
The liftgate and rear bumper also have more flow to them than the true Subaru cousin. Inside, the first thing you notice are the seats. The Saab versions get much better upholstered seats with an option for leather.
The engine and transmissions are the same though. With the help of some upgraded suspension bits and a faster steering rack, you'd think they gave it a bit more pep though.
If you can find one of these plush gems in good condition, they will accept all your favorite mods. Engine upgrades and tuning are compatible with all the Subaru bits as well as suspension upgrades.
SAABaru Repair | While we work a lot more than just Subaru repairs, we do have a soft spot for those boxer motors.
There were only a little over 10,000 of these made, with most of them being non-tubro. If you can find a turbo manual in good condition, you're a lucky person. Keep it, love it, mod it.
